About Uncommon Family Adventures
Our Story
We don't just write about multi-generational travel; we are the embodiment of multi-generational travel. Four generations, one family, constantly on the road together.
We're Kevin and Colleen, a 50+ couple who have been traveling full-time with our three daughters since 2024. Between the five of us, we cover the full generational range from Baby Boomer to Gen Alpha, which means we've learned firsthand how to navigate everything from conflicting ideas about technology use to vastly different ideas about what makes a perfect travel day.
This isn't just our story. It's our expertise. We know what it takes to plan trips that work for twenty-somethings and teens. We understand the unique dynamics of traveling with adult children who have their own opinions (and budgets). And we've figured out how to keep everyone engaged, connected, and actually enjoying each other's company across time zones, cultures, and even the occasional WiFi outage.
Some people think it's “too late” to travel with teens, but we believe it's never too late to experience world travel adventures together. In fact, the teen and young adult years might just be the sweet spot. They’re old enough to truly appreciate where you are and young enough to still want to explore it with you.
If you're traveling together with teens, young adults, or multiple generations, you're in the right place.
What We Bring to You
Multi-generational travel isn't always easy, but it's incredibly rewarding when you get it right. We've spent years figuring out what actually works, not just in theory, but in practice. We’ve learned so much as we’ve traveled across more than 20 countries and 4 continents while managing the countless family dynamics of a multi-generational crew.
Whether you're planning your first trip with adult kids, navigating the teen years on the road, or trying to bring multiple generations (including grandparents) together for a family trip that doesn't end in frustration, we've been there. We've made the mistakes, learned the lessons, and discovered the strategies that turn potential tension into genuine connection.
Welcome to Uncommon Family Adventures. Let us help you make your next trip one everyone remembers fondly for years to come.
Meet the Family
Kevin — The Visionary & Eternal Optimist
Born as a tail-end Baby Boomer, Kevin gets us where we need to go both literally and mentally. With a background in math, economics, and analytics, he manages all the behind-the-scenes systems for our blog and serves as the family's go-to tutor for higher-level math.
His travel superpower: pushing us to dream big and navigating us through any challenge while genuinely believing (and reminding us) that "everything always works out." And honestly? It always does.
Colleen — The Storyteller & Family Anchor
Born solidly in the Gen X timeframe, Colleen brings our travels to life through the stories she tells. She loves history, true crime podcasts, and is perpetually in the middle of at least two books. But she's also the one who keeps daily life running smoothly—managing laundry, meal planning, and making sure schoolwork gets done no matter where in the world we are.
Her travel superpower: putting together a nutritious home-cooked meal anywhere, from a tiny Airbnb kitchen in Malaysia to a pet sit in a family home in Australia.
Ellie — The Editor & Travel Coordinator
Born as an older Gen Z with some Millennial traits, Ellie is in her 20s and fully independent—which makes it even more meaningful that she's chosen to prioritize traveling with us. She's the organizational backbone of our travels, booking flights, securing Airbnbs, coordinating logistics, and editing our content. But her real value goes beyond logistics: she's our third adult, always willing to step up, and has cultivated a remarkably close relationship with her much younger sisters by choosing to be fully present with them.
Her travel superpower: keeping everything running smoothly while capturing the best memories in photos that tell the story of where we've been.
Rachel — The Artist & Curious Collector
Born as a younger Gen Z, Rachel is our artist and museum lover with an insatiable appetite for knowledge. She dives deep into whatever captures her fascination—currently it's birds, but her creative outlets range from writing original stories with meticulously drawn characters to embroidery and mending. She excels at building authentic friendships in online communities across continents and time zones that enrich how she (and we) experience every destination.
Her travel superpower: finding meaning and inspiration in every museum, ancient site, and new culture we encounter.
Sophie — The Animator & Fearless Voice
Born as a solid Gen Alpha, Sophie may be the youngest, but don't let that fool you. With a quick, fiery wit and a sharp, hilarious tongue that often catches us by surprise, she easily holds her own in any family conversation. She's tech savvy and deeply immersed in animation, posting shorts on her own YouTube channel and inspiring her mentor to create a specialized course just to keep her challenged.
Her travel superpower: adapting to new places with remarkable ease while transforming every destination into inspiration for her next animated creation—all with her headphones on (Stray Kids to Post Malone).
