Wales wasn’t even on our radar—until a pet-sitting gig brought us to Rhayader. And wow, are we glad it did! From meeting Billy, an energetic pup, to being welcomed by the warmest locals, Rhayader didn’t just impress us—it completely rewrote what we thought family travel could be. History of Rhayader, Wales

Rhayader is rich in history and surrounded by awe-inspiring landscapes. As one of the oldest towns in mid-Wales, Rhayader's story dates back to 1177, with evidence of settlements from the Bronze Age and Roman times. The town’s name, Rhayadr Gwy, comes from the Welsh term for a local waterfall on the River Wye.

Over the centuries, Rhayader has played an important role in the region, from its medieval castle, built to resist Norman invaders, to its role as a key stop for sheep and cattle drovers in the 18th and 19th centuries. Rhayader also saw significant infrastructure development in the late 19th century with the construction of dams and aqueducts, providing clean water to Birmingham. Queen Victoria herself ordered the construction, and the work was completed by 1904.

Today, Rhayader is a vibrant market town and a gateway to the scenic Elan Valley and Cambrian Mountains, where the past blends seamlessly with the present.

What Brought Our Family to Rhayader, Wales

We arrived in Rhayader from Bristol, excited for a pet-sitting adventure. Through TrustedHousesitters, which matches homeowners with travelers, we’d arranged to look after Billy, the energetic pup. In addition to Billy, we were looking forward to meeting his owners, Anita and Kevin (yes, it was confusing for us to deal with two Kevins). Although we'd previously communicated virtually, this was our first time meeting them in person—and we arrived a couple days ahead of the couple’s departure (at their request) to settle in and learn about Billy’s routine.

Despite our initial nerves, Kevin, Anita, and Billy greeted us like old friends. Their warmth and generosity made us feel at ease right away. We spent the next few days exploring the town and getting to know Billy’s favorite spots. Rhayader is remarkably dog-friendly, and we had a blast walking Billy to parks, trails, and scenic spots, meeting other locals and their dogs along the way. In fact, we were struck by how many retired residents were out walking their dogs, staying active in the fresh Welsh air!

We spent two more days with our amazing hosts when they returned from their travels. We got to see pictures from their travels and tales of their adventures. They even introduced us to their favorite pubs and some local friends. From offering advice on routes and day trips to treating us like treasured family, Kevin and Anita were the epitome of hospitality! Our girls even began to refer to them as their “Welsh grandparents.” This was particularly funny since neither Kevin nor Anita were born or raised in Wales but each arrived (in adulthood) and decided to stay. By the time we left, we were sad to say goodbye to our new friends.

Things to Do in Rhayader, Wales with Kids

Despite its small size, Rhayader offers no shortage of fun, family-friendly activities. As many of the activities will take advantage of the great outdoors, you’ll want to be sure to pack your raincoats. Mid Wales is notorious for frequent rain (no wonder everything is so lush and green).

This town has plenty of activity to get your heart pumping and foster an appreciation for the scenic valley. From playgrounds and easy walking paths for toddlers and younger kids to hikes and water sports that will challenge your teens. You might even be lucky enough to have a view of the Northern Lights like we did during our visit. This is the kind of place that will give you family memories to last a lifetime.

• Trails – Rhayader is the perfect base for exploring some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in Wales, including family hiking trails and the best nature walks in Mid Wales. There are plenty of trails that traverse the entire area where you can explore the waters, green landscapes, and wildlife of the quaint town. Many of the trails provide access to the glorious views of the nearby Elan Valley. You’ll find trails ranging in difficulty from easy paved paths (accessible for strollers and wheelchairs) to challenging terrain for avid hikers.

• Sporting – From fishing and kayaking to mountain biking and horseback riding, there’s much to keep your family active in Rhayader. Fly fishing is a great way to enjoy the area whether you’re a novice or a competitive fisherman. For those who prefer exercising indoors or want to stay active when the weather isn’t cooperative, you can head to the Rhayader Leisure Center for swimming and fitness. 

• Gigrin Farm – For animal lovers, a trip to Gigrin Farm is an unforgettable experience. Home to one of the largest populations of red kites in the UK, Gigrin Farm hosts daily feedings that are sure to fascinate both kids and adults. Witnessing these majestic birds swoop down to feast is a truly special experience. Take a tour to learn about the local wildlife and the conservation efforts in place to protect these stunning creatures. There’s even a coffee shop and picnic area providing an opportunity to make a full day of this experience.  

• Pump Track Wales – If your kids enjoy a bit of adventure on wheels, be sure to check out Pump Track Wales. Located just outside of Rhayader, it is the first split sprint pump track in the UK! This family-friendly track is perfect for biking, scootering, and skateboarding, making it a hit with older children and teens. It is open year-round and can provide hours of entertainment absolutely free!

Dining with Kids in Rhayader, Wales

For families searching for the best dining experiences, we recommend these family-friendly restaurants in Rhayader. For Traditional Welsh meals, look no further than one of the many local pubs. The Crown Inn and the Castle Carvery are just two of the numerous options where you can enjoy hearty dishes (including many that feature lamb and mutton, thanks to the bountiful supply here) in a cozy and friendly setting. In addition to kids, most of these restaurants welcome dogs. We could tell that Billy was a frequent visitor as he would turn his head in the direction of just about every pub we passed as if to say, “Come on, let’s go in!”

Narrative Coffee is a relatively new addition to Rhayader’s shops. They offer specialty-grade coffee along with cakes, teas, and milkshakes. There’s a little something for everyone! Narrative has quickly become more than just a place for coffee-drinkers. The inviting space offers a friendly environment where residents come to mingle and enjoy each other's company. 

One of our personal family favorites was Evans Plaice, a fish and chips shop that we visited 3 times! This shop has been a Rhayader family run staple for over 60 years, cooking up crispy, golden fish and chips for generations of residents. It’s not just traditional fish and chips that they serve though, they also offer pizza, chicken, and savory pies. While we can’t speak to the pizza, everything else was absolutely delicious! It was a perfect comfort food after a day of exploring. So much so that we got it again only a few days later. When Kevin and Anita returned from their travels, we even got it as their first dinner back.

Living Like Locals in Rhayader, Wales

Rhayader offers a fantastic opportunity to experience life in a small Welsh town. The pace of life is slower here, and the strong sense of community is something families can truly appreciate. The town hosts a variety of local events throughout the year, including agricultural shows, vintage car rallies, community Easter Egg hunts, pumpkin carving, and craft fairs. These local events, markets, and festivals are a great way to immerse yourself in Rhayader’s lively spirit. 

The Rhayader Carnival, held in the summer, features parades, live music, and family-friendly activities, while the neighboring Elan Valley hosts seasonal events such as guided walks and nature workshops. During the winter months, the town comes alive with Christmas festivities, including a family-friendly 5k Reindeer Run, Breakfast with Father Christmas, and a Winter Woodland Grotto. 

The town's welcoming atmosphere makes it easy to meet and connect with locals, whether you’re attending an event, shopping in small boutiques, or chatting with owners of the local restaurants.
